Munken Mount Board | Conservation, Acid-Free
Munken mount board from Sweden, at conservation grade — 1.4, 1.7 or 2.0 mm, cut with the window you ask for. It is a conservation-grade board: no lignin, an alkaline reserve, so the glazing never touches your work and the paper does not yellow in the years after. You get two boards — one backing board and one window board — and a print that can still be taken out, intact.

The simplest and least expensive way to protect your work
A mount is not decoration — it holds the work clear of the acrylic, and that is what protects it. If the board is acidic, it will yellow the work and turn it acidic over time. Ours is Munken conservation-grade board from Sweden, certified to the Fine Art Trade Guild standard for conservation mount board — under normal conditions it protects a mounted work for about 20 years.
Materials & construction
- Munken conservation-grade board from Sweden — a mill making paper since 1871, board meeting ISO 9706 (permanence of paper), passing the Photographic Activity Test (ISO 18916) and meeting the Fine Art Trade Guild standard for conservation mount board.
- Thickness: 1.4 mm, 1.7 mm or 2.0 mm — every thickness takes the work, so any of the three will do; the difference is only the depth you see.
- Each set contains two boards: one backing board and one window board (the one that is cut), plus four acid-free photo corners to hold the work in place. You fill in the window size yourself when you order.
- Two faces, two colours (Munken Duo): Cream on one side, Off White on the other, and either face can be the one you see. We present the Cream face by default — tell us when you order if you prefer the other.
- Cut square and clean, without a fuzzy edge. Machine cutting carries a 1–3 mm tolerance, and we would rather say so up front.
- Window cut to the size you enter — you fill in the width and height when you order.

How to order a window
You enter the opening size yourself when you order, in millimetres — the part of the artwork you want to see.
We suggest a window 5 mm smaller than the work overall, so the border overlaps the work by 5 mm in total around all four sides. For a 200 × 200 mm print, enter 195 × 195 mm. Those 5 mm sit under the border and are never seen; they are what keeps the work from shifting.
Check it before you order, because the window is cut to the number you enter and cannot be adjusted afterwards. The board's outer size is the board size; the window is the picture size. Two different numbers — make sure the one you fill in is the right one.
Recommended for
Signed prints, photographs, photos and certificates mounted with a card border — easy to show around, and it can go straight into a frame on a hinge; take it out later to look at, or to reframe, and the work is still intact.
Good to know
- This is mount board. It is not a frame, and glazing is not included.
- The window must be smaller than the outer size — that border is what keeps the work clear of the glazing. Give us a window that leaves too little border and we will come back to you.
- Centred by default. Tell us if you want the window off-centre or in a different shape.
- "About 20 years" is the protection period for conservation-grade materials under normal conditions — out of direct sunlight, 10–25 °C, 40–60% relative humidity. How long yours lasts depends on where you put it.
